MÃ¥rup Church

Mårup is a former parish seat in the Jammerbucht on the territory of the present municipality Hjørring in Vendsyssel in northern Jutland. Here is Lønstrup Klint, an impressive escarpment edge that merges into the dune Rubjerg Knude south.

The site offers more than any other in Denmark, the impressive spectacle of coastal erosion an active ablation coast. Especially the change from storms, floods, rain, frost and thaw sets to the cliffs, frost damage can lead to large country crashes. Over the past one hundred years, the coastal line by 300 meters has receded.

Church

The Romanesque hall church with chancel was built in the 13th century as a brick for the simplest pattern jütischer village churches. Noteworthy was the reinforcement of the north wall through semicircular pilasters. A church steeple was demolished in the 18th century and replaced by a free-standing wooden belfry.

The church was on the building in 1926, the interior was transferred to the newly built church in Lønstrup. After only a mobile stalls was in the church in which on special occasions until Easter 2008 services were celebrated. The orphaned church building was transferred to the custody of the Danish National Museum. 1998 were held extensive archaeological digs.

The heavy storms of the following years, the coastline as far back urged that a little later the first corner of the cemetery was attacked. The drip line is only a few meters from the building. However, a Danish company tried to secure the coastal strip. In August 2007, the Danish National Museum refused having regard to the costs and the resistance of the local population from the proposal to the church to put in the open air museum in Lyngby. In late November 2007, the Commissioner for Cultural and Environmental Protection Agency decided the controlled degradation of the church. Roof and interior were dismantled and stored in the fall of 2008. Currently, about 2 m high walls are gradually dismantled, so that a safe distance from the escarpment of around 6 m is maintained. The wall socket should be preserved in order to characterize the building outline as long as possible. The decommissioning of the Ostgiebels is expected to be 2016-2019. It is not yet decided when and where the church should be rebuilt.
