Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art

The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art is an art museum in Evanston, Illinois. It is located on the campus of the local Northwestern University.

History

The Chicago Steel Manager Leigh Block (1905-1987) and his wife Mary Lasker Block (1904-1981) was an art collector. You donated in 1980 from Northwestern University to construct a new building for initially changing exhibitions on the type of German art halls. The building was named after its founders Mary and Leigh Block Gallery.

Collections

But soon decreed the museum through purchases and donations through its own art collection and so it got its present name in 1998. Today, the collection includes 700 paintings and 3,300 prints. Highlights of the collection are works by Albrecht Dürer, Honoré Daumier, Max Beckmann, Wassily Kandinsky, Mary Cassatt, Henri Matisse, Jasper Johns, Chuck Close and Kiki Smith.
