Mary Duncan

Mary Duncan ( born August 13, 1895 in Luttrellville, Virginia; † May 9, 1993 in Palm Beach, Florida) was an American actress.

Life

Mary Duncan had already gained some stage experience as a teenager and received her first role in 1910 in the Broadway play Welcome to Our City. Since the early 1920s it was then seen regularly on Broadway and has performed in Face Value (1921) and New Toys ( 1924). After she was concerned for her portrayal of "Poppy " in the very successful play The Shanghai Gesture with good reviews, she moved into the film business. Among her best-known films include Four Devils (1928) and Our Daily Bread (1930 ), both directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau.

Your last film appearance was alongside Katharine Hepburn in the drama Morning Glory ( 1933). In the same year she married the polo player and carpet manufacturers Stephen Sanford, whom she had met in 1931 on Marion Davies and ended her acting career. The marriage lasted until Sanford's death in 1977.

Since her marriage she lived in Palm Beach, where she was memorable mainly as the organizer of great festivities and various charity events. She was a close friend of Rose Kennedy.
