Mary Washington House

The Mary Washington House, at 1200 Charles Street in the city of Fredericksburg, is the house where George Washington's mother, Mary Ball Washington lived at the end of their lives.

George Washington bought this house for his mother in 1772, she lived there until her death in 1789. Marys husband and George's father, Augustine Washington died 1743 in Fredericksburg. The house is situated on the corner of Charles and Lewis Streets and Kenmoreplantage, the estate of Mary's daughter Betty Washington Lewis was, and from there to reach on foot. The future President George Washington got there before his inauguration in 1789 to his mother's blessing.

The Mary Washington House is located near the university which was named after her, the University of Mary Washington. In 1891, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities acquired the house. It was partly planned to dismantle the building and send it to the exhibition Chicago World's Fair. The house has since been restored and is open to the public. The house is considered one of the landmarks of the city of Fredericksburg.
