Masamichi Takesaki

Masamichi Takesaki (Japanese竹崎 正道, Masamichi Takesaki, born July 18, 1933, Sendai ) is a Japanese mathematician who deals with operator algebras.

Takesaki studied at Tohoku University with a diploma degree in 1958 and his doctorate in 1965. Starting from 1958 he was a research assistant at the Tokyo Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1968 and associate professor at Tohoku University. In 1968/69 he was Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and from 1970 professor at the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA).

He has been a visiting professor at the University of Aix -Marseille (1973 /74) and Bielefeld (1975 /76).

He is known for the Tomita - Takesaki theory of modular automorphisms of von Neumann algebras. It was developed by Minoru Tomita until 1967, but it was difficult to understand, published only partially ( in Japanese ) and was little noticed, before she presented Takesaki 1970 in a book.

In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice (One parameter automorphism groups and states of operator algebras ). In 1990 he received the Fujiwara Science Award. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
