Master of the Bützow Altarpiece

As a master of Biitzow altar a Low German painters of the late Middle Ages is called, the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century in his workshop in Lübeck worked. The unnamed artist received his Notnamen by a Marie altar which he had created for the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, John and Elizabeth to Biitzow.

He got this name in the 20th century after the dated 1503 Marie altar, which was donated by the Schwerin Bishop Konrad Loste the Collegiate Church Biitzow. In the time of the creation of the altar, the performing artists often waived on a signature of their works. Therefore, the history of art tries a characteristic work of an artist, assign the eponymous altar, other works due to the artistic style as here. In the case of the Master of Biitzow altar, these are the altar wing of St. John's Altar of Corpus Christi Brotherhood in Luebeck St. Anne's Convent, namely the outer sides of the inactive door leaf and the outer wings, and large parts of the altar in the Marienkirche in Parchim. His participation at the altar of the Church of Singö in Sweden is debatable. He also is associated with the Annen- altar in the church of Trondenes in Northern Norway.
