Master of the Die

As a master with the cube ( fr. Maître au Dé, . Maestro del dado it ) is an engraver from Italy called, who was attributed to him works with a small cube and the standing thereon letter B (V). The unnamed Champion was probably active in Rome in the first half of the 16th century.

Work and style

The Master with the cube joins the operation of the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi (* 1480, † 1534) and stood above all for pictures of Raphael and Giulio Romano, for example, after or Baldassarre Peruzzi. The engravings of the master and their distribution show high productivity in the workshop of Raimondi, the quality of their output and very skilled in the dissemination of images of Raphael's work. More than 85 engravings of the Master of the cube are listed.

Attempts to identify

Originally known as Nicolas Beatrizet (* 1515, † 1565) or Benedetto Verino; ( † 1536 * 1493 ), a wizard (* 1512 1570 †) sought to identify the master with the dice today mostly as probably identical with Tommaso Vincidor is Raphael seen. All identification tests, however, are controversial.
