Baldassare Peruzzi

Baldassare Peruzzi ( born March 7, 1481 Ancaiano ( today part of Sovicille) at Siena; † January 6, 1536 in Rome ) was an Italian architect and painter. His work had a significant influence on the revival of ancient systems of order in the architecture of Italy in the 16th century.

Life

He was as Tommaso Peruzzi Baldassarre born as the son of Giovanni di Salvestro di Salvadore Peruzzi, derived from a Volterra Weber. His craft as an architect, he studied under Bernardino Fungai and Francesco di Giorgio. Great influence on his work had the then acting in Siena artist Pinturicchio and Il Sodoma.

As an artist, is first mentioned Peruzzi 1501, when he was paid for work on the San Giovanni Baptistery of the Cathedral of Siena, and is called in the relevant documents. In the middle of 1503, he moved to Rome. Here he built in the years 1509-1511, the Villa Farnesina, and painted there some frescoes. In 1520 he was appointed architect of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, in 1529 the architect of the Duomo in Siena. From 1527 to 1532 he worked as Architetto della Repubblica in the defense strategy of Siena and the corresponding province. Outside of Siena Torrita di Siena and other strategic locations in the Republic of Siena has strengthened the fortifications in Sarteano. In Siena, even the walls of Siena were reinforced by Peruzzi and it created five new bastions ( Bastion of Porta Laterina, Bastion of San Marco, Bastion of San Prospero, bastions San Viene and Fortino delle Donne ), of which three still exist. His successor as Architetto della Repubblica was Giovanni Battista Pelori (1483-1558), who was born in Siena and his craft by Baldassare Peruzzi learned.

In the years 1532-1536 he built the Palazzo Massimo in Rome all Colonne, who is counted among the most important works of Mannerism. 1535 took over Vannoccio Biringuccio the succession as cathedral architect.

Particularly important in the theory of architecture of the Renaissance became Peruzzi by the graphic documentation of ancient Roman buildings. His drawings were the basis for the "seven books on architecture " Sebastiano Serlio his colleague. This work became the most widely read treatise on architecture in the second half of the 16th century.

Peruzzi was buried in the Roman pantheon. He left a son, Giovanni Sallustio Peruzzi, who also became artists.
