Mathis Wackernagel

Mathis Wackernagel ( born November 10, 1962 in Basel ) is a Swiss pioneer in the field of sustainability. He is president of the organization Global Footprint Network, an international research group in Oakland ( California).

After studying engineering at the ETH Zurich in 1994, he earned a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver ( Canada). As part of its work on the dissertation he developed jointly with William Rees, the concept of the Ecological Footprint / " Ecological Footprint ". Since then, he is active in research and teaching, advising governments and non-governmental organizations and is the author of numerous articles and several books. Above all he is concerned with the development of ways to capture tangible the limitations of organic raw materials and to design objectives for sustainable development. From the Faculty of the University of Bern Philosophy and science in 2007, he received an honorary doctorate. From 2011, he is also " Frank HT Rhodes Class of 1956 " visiting professor at Cornell University ( NY).
