Mati Unt

Mati Unt ( born January 1, 1944 at Linnamäe village, district Jõgeva / Estonia; † August 22, 2005 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer, theater director, translator and literary critic.

Life and work

Mati Unt attended from 1951 to 1958 the village school of Leedimäe ( circle Jõgeva ) and put his Abitur in 1962 in Tartu. Until 1967 he studied Estonian Philology at the University of Tartu.

1966-1972 worked Mati Unt on Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu, 1975-1981 in the Youth Theatre as its literary director. 1981-1991 he was a director at the Youth Theatre and 1992-2003 director at Draamateater in Tallinn. He then worked as a freelance artist in Tallinn.

Mati Unt wrote more than fifteen novels and short stories as well as ten plays. In addition, include productions and film scripts to his great literary work. He is considered one of the most innovative and prolific writer of Estonian modernism and postmodernism.

Mati Unt has received numerous awards, including the named after peace Tuglas always Prize for Literature (1976 ), the Juhan Smuul Prize (1978) and the Cultural Prize of the Republic of Estonia ( 2001).
