Matilda of Brandenburg, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg

Countess Matilda of Brandenburg (* 1210, † June 10, 1261 in Lüneburg) was by marriage Duchess of Brunswick- Lüneburg.

Life

Matilda was the daughter of Margrave Albrecht II of Brandenburg (1150-1220) from the house of Ascanians and his wife Countess Mathilde von der Lausitz (1185-1225), daughter of Count Conrad II of Landsberg. Her father and Duke William of Lüneburg mediated a marriage between their children, to unite the divided lines of the Saxon rule again. In 1219, Pope Honorius III. his permission to overcome the impediments to marriage (fourth degree of kinship ).

In 1228 Matilda married in Braunschweig the later Duke Otto I the Child ( 1204-1252 ), son of Duke William of Lüneburg and his wife Helen of Denmark. From the marriage ten children were born, which allowed a outreaching marriage policy of Guelph.
