Henry II, Prince of Anhalt-Aschersleben

( † after June 12, 1266 * 1215), was a German sovereign of the family of Henry II Ascanians Prince of Anhalt - Aschersleben, called " fats ".

Life

Henry II was the eldest son of Prince Heinrich I of Anhalt and Irmgard of Thuringia, daughter of Landgrave Hermann I, who reigned from 1252 to 1266 as the first Prince of Anhalt- Aschersleben.

Henry II of fats was co-regent with his father since 1244, Henry I and divided after his death in 1252 the country Anhalt with his two brothers. He himself took the old trunk areas Askanien - Aschersleben, Hecklingen, Ermsleben and Wörbzig. In 1247 he intervened in the Thuringian War of Succession and championed in alliance with Duke Albert I of Brunswick -Lüneburg own interests. He came in 1263 at the Battle of Besenstedt in captivity, was imprisoned until 1265 and had to completely do without. He chose 1257 Alfonso X of Castile with the German king and led feuds against the monasteries and archbishops of Magdeburg and Bishop of Halberstadt, also against the brothers and cousins. Marriage and issue

He was married since 1245 with Mechtild of Brunswick- Lüneburg, daughter of Duke Otto. She was regent since 1266 and from 1275 to 1295 Abbess of Gernrode.

The couple had the following children:

  • Otto I († 1304) - Prince of Anhalt - Aschersleben,
  • Henry III. († November 10, 1307 ) - Prince of Anhalt - Aschersleben (together with Otto I ) to 1283, then, among other things Archbishop of Magdeburg,
  • Mechtild - married to Werner I. Count of Hadmersleben peace - castle.
