Otto I, Prince of Anhalt-Aschersleben

Otto I of Anhalt († June 25, 1304 ) from the house of Ascanians was reigning prince of Anhalt- Aschersleben.

Life

Otto I was the eldest son of Prince Henry II of Anhalt and his wife Mechtild, a daughter of Duke Otto I of Brunswick and Lüneburg, after which he was named.

Together with his brother Henry III. he was since the death of his father in 1266, co-ruler of Anhalt- Aschersleben. However, since both were not yet of age, her mother Mathilde ran the business of the country until 1270.

Otto and Heinrich ruled Anhalt- Aschersleben henceforth jointly by the year 1283. This year, the younger brother Henry embarked on a clerical career and became a canon in Magdeburg and provost of the pin Blasius in Braunschweig. Otto ruled the Principality from then until his death in 1304 alone.

Marriage and issue

Otto was married since 1283 to Hedwig of Silesia ( * 1252/56; † before December 14, 1300 ), daughter of Duke Henry III. of Silesia -Breslau and widow of Henry, the eldest son of Albert II of Meissen.

The couple had the following children:

  • Otto II († July 24, 1315 ) - latest Prince of Anhalt - Aschersleben,
  • Sophie - married to Ulrich III. Count of Regenstein - Heimburg before 1308
  • Elizabeth - married to Friedrich II Count of Beichlingen -Rotenburg about 1300.
