At the age of eight, he was accepted into the prestigious Liceo Musicale in Bergamo, which was under the direction of Johann Simon Mayr. There he was trained in singing and composition. At 18, he took over at the Institute the place of a piano teacher and was from 1839 conductor at both theaters in Bergamo. 1842 brought him Gaetano Donizetti to Vienna, where he, as with Simon Sechter took lessons. 1842 or 1847 his opera La Prima Donna and Catherine Howard were listed on Kärntnertortheater with great success. The Revolution of 1848 thwarted all the plans, because in the following years there were no Italian opera season in Vienna and Salvi, had to eke out despite all the successes of his life as a singing teacher. In 1854 he conducted the performance of Gioachino Rossini's Stabat Mater with 1500 participants. He took on the leadership of the Academy of Music, where he particularly goal for the singing lessons. 1860 he was appointed to the provisional head of the Vienna Court Opera, and became director, he took over from 1864 to 1867. During this period there was also an opera school founded by him in the house. 1875 to 1878 he took over as head of the Conservatory in Bergamo. While he had to fight in Vienna with the prejudice he prefer the Italian music, he was now exposed in Bergamo on charges of proximity to the Austrian imperial family.
