Matthew Arthur, 1st Baron Glenarthur

Matthew Arthur, 1st Baron Glenarthur ( born March 9, 1852September 23, 1928 ), 1903-1918 Sir Matthew Arthur, 1st Baronet, Scottish businessman and peer.

Glenarthur the son of James Arthur from Carlung in Ayrshire and Barshaw in Renfrewshire, the founder of the clothing retail company Arthur & Co. was His mother was Jane Glen, a daughter of Thomas Glen from Thornhill in Renfrewshire.

Glenarthur was chairman of the family firm Arthur and Co, the Lochgelly Iron and Coal Company and the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company ( G & SWR ). He was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers. He was knighted in 1903 as a Baronet, of Carlung in the County of Ayr. In 1918 he became a Baron Glenarthur, of Carlung in the County of Ayr peer and member of the House of Lords. The title of the barony comes as Matronym and patronymic from the birth name of his mother and the last name of his father.

Lord Glenarthur married in 1876 Janet, daughter of Alexander Bennett McGrigor. He died in 1928 at the age of 76 years and inherited his title to his son Cecil. His wife Lady Glenarthur died 1946.
