Matthew Kneale

Matthew Kneale (* November 24, 1960 ) is a British author.

Kneale is best known for his novel English Passengers (2000), which won the Whitbread Book Award. He studied Modern History at Magdalen College. After a stay in Japan, he began writing. He currently lives in Lazio, an hour's drive from Rome, Italy. His other awards include the Somerset Maugham Award (1988 ) and the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize (1992).

Kneale is the son of Nigel Kneale and Judith Kerr and the brother of Tacy Kneale.
