Matthieu Ricard

Matthieu Ricard (* February 15, 1946 in France) is a Buddhist monk and a trained molecular biologist with a degree in Zellulargenetik and promotion at the Nobel laureate Francois Jacob at the Pasteur Institute.

Life

Matthieu Ricard grew up in the environment of France on intellectuals. His mother, the artist Yahne Le Toumelin, and his father, who was one of the most influential living philosophers and political theorists of France under the pseudonym of Jean -François Revel, enabled him to deal with the great thinkers and creators of this time.

In his own presentation began his " real " life on 2 June 1967, when he met Kangyur Rinpoche. As Kangyur died, Matthieu monk and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche personal assistant, with whom he spent twelve years day and night. After the death of his teacher, he wrote the book "Journey to Enlightenment: The Life and World of Khyentse Rinpoche, Spiritual Teacher from Tibet " about his life and work.

Since 1989 he has been the official French translator for the Dalai Lama. Together with his father, he published the internationally successful book, " The Monk and the Philosopher ". In it are - on topics of general philosophical, spiritual and social interest - the prospects of the Western world and Buddhism faced, illustrate the differences and similarities highlighted.

He is a board member of the Mind and Life Institute, which promotes communication between Western science and Buddhism and their cooperation. He is currently working together with brain researchers on the effects of meditation and mind training on the brain (Madison - Wisconsin, Princeton and Berkeley ).

Ricard lives currently in Shechen Monastery in Nepal.
