Maupertuis (crater)

44.1

Maupertuis is an impact crater in the northwest of the lunar front side. The heavily eroded crater is located in mountainous, heavily fissured terrain in the Montes Jura northeast of the sinus iridium. South-east is the plain of the Mare Imbrium and south of the promontory Laplace. To the east beyond the side crater Maupertuis A is a system of fractures, the Rimae Maupertuis.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 by the French mathematician Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis.
