Maurice Banach

Maurice " Mucki " Banach ( born October 9, 1967 in Münster, † November 17, 1991 in Remscheid ) was a German football player.

The son of a German mother and an American GI was considered one of the most promising striker talents of the late 1980s and early 1990s in Germany.

Club career

Banach played to the C- Youth for Preußen Münster and then moved to the B- youth of Borussia Dortmund. In Dortmund he received at the age of 17 years, his first professional contract and played until 1988 14 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund and scored two goals. But since he never had the breakthrough at BVB, he joined in the summer of 1988 to the second division SG Wattenscheid 09, at the 21 goals he was top scorer in the season 1989 /1990.

Then moved Banach 1 FC Köln in the Bundesliga. In 49 games for the Cologne he scored 24 goals. His last two goals scored by the striker on November 9, 1991 at home Mungerdorferstadion in a 4-1 victory against Fortuna Dusseldorf, a week later, he played the last game in his pro career away at FC Schalke 04 After Banach had agreed, after the not return game with the team to Cologne, but to remain in his home city of Münster, he got up the next morning from there to workout.

On the morning of November 17, 1991 Maurice Banach accident on the A1 near Remscheid near the junction Remscheid- Lüttringhausen fatal. His car came off the road from, crashed into a bridge abutment and burst into flames. Banach was probably killed instantly and burned in his vehicle. As a possible cause of the accident to excessive speed was adopted, but the exact circumstances of the accident were never able to be fully elucidated. His grave is located at the Central Cemetery in Muenster.

The upcoming Bundesliga match against Dynamo Dresden was canceled by the 1st FC Cologne and rescheduled until December 10. When international match of the German team three days later in Brussels against Belgium ( 1-0) a minute's silence was held for Banach.
