Maurice Grevisse

Maurice Grevisse [ gʁəvis ] ( born October 7, 1895 in Rulles, Luxembourg Province; † July 4, 1980 in La Louviere, Hainaut ) was a Belgian grammarian.

Life

Grevisse attended the Normal School of Carl Bourg, where he was awarded the 1915 teacher's diploma. He then moved to the Normal School of Malonne and became a teacher of Literature. Later he became a French teacher at the École des Pupilles the army in Marneffe. During this time he taught himself Latin and Greek. Later he studied classical philology at the University of Liège. In 1925 he became "Doctor of classical philology ." In 1927 he became a professor at the École Royale des Cadets in Namur. In 1957, he went into retirement.

Grevisse noticed that the former grammar textbooks did not meet his teacher claims. Therefore, he gathered his notes and took them into the manuscript to Le Bon Usage together.

Many renowned publishers rejected the manuscript; in the end it moved an unpretentious publisher of Gembloux in 1936. Duculot The publisher was founded, and the success of the work not did not let up, even during the war. André Gide, who wrote for the Figaro, described the book as the best grammar book that give it.

1971 Grevisse officer of the Legion of Honour. From 1967 until his death he was sitting in the International Panel on the French language. His son André Goosse, also a grammarian, revised Le Bon Usage on, of which there are currently 15 editions.
