Maurice Martens

Maurice Martens ( born June 5, 1947 in Aalst ) is a retired Belgian footballer.

Club career

Martens began his career in the major Belgian club RSC Anderlecht. In the four years at Anderlecht in 1968 he won the Belgian championship. Three years after the championship, he moved to RWD Molenbeek, the city rivals Anderlecht. With Molenbeek he won in 1975 for the second time the Belgian championship. In 1973 he was voted player of the year in Belgium. In 1983 he ended his active career and opened a sports shop in Brussels.

National team career

Martens participated in the World Cup in Mexico in 1970 and retired there with the team in the first round. In the 1972 European Championship in his own country he was third with Belgium. Eight years later, at the European Championships in Italy in 1980, he was able to move with the Belgians in the final, where they lost to Germany 1-2. Martens was able to call themselves European Vice Champion with it.
