Maurice Peston, Baron Peston

Maurice Harry Peston, Baron Peston, of Mile End in Greater London ( born March 19, 1931) is a British economist, university lecturer and Labour Party politician, who is a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1987.

Life

After visiting the Hackney Downs School Peston graduated in mathematics and economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Princeton University, and then took up an academic teaching. His teachers included, among other things, Claus Adolf Moser. Recently he accepted a professorship of economics at Queen Mary College, London University and taught there until his retirement. In addition to his teaching, he has written numerous economics textbooks that dealt with topics such as macroeconomics, game theory and public goods.

In addition, he was 1967-1973 Member of the Council for National Academic Pricing ( Council for National Academic Awards) and 1976 to 1979 Chairman of the Economic Council of Economic and Social Research Council ( ESRC). He was also an advisor to many governments of the Labour Party.

Peston was raised by a Letters Patent of 24 March 1987 as a life peer with the title Baron Peston, of Mile End in Greater London to the peerage. Shortly thereafter, took place on March 25, 1987 his Introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords. In the upper house he belongs to the Group of the Labour Party.

During his many years of membership in the upper house he was between 1987 and 1997 both opposition spokesman on energy as well as for education and science. In addition, he was from 1990 to 1992 spokesman for the opposition Labour Group for the Treasury (Treasury ), and then between 1992 and 1997, commercial and industrial. In 2001, he was temporarily Chairman of the House of Lords Committee on Economic Affairs.
