Max Lohde

Max Lohde ( born February 13, 1845 in Berlin, † December 18, 1868 in Naples) was a German painter.

Lohde, last student of Peter von Cornelius, studied under Cornelius and until 1866 at the Berlin Academy. A study trip to Silesia aroused his interest for some discovered the remains of old Sgraffitomalereien, and succeeded to acquire a special procedure in this technique.

In 1867 he led in sgraffito four great compositions from the Trojan myth cycle in the stairwell of the Berlin Sophie Gymnasium (in color printing in 4 sheets, Berl. 1868). Moreover, even sgraffito emerged in the gables of the hippodrome of the War Ministry and other decorative paintings.

During a trip to Italy Lohde died on 18 December 1868 in Naples.

His talks with Cornelius and his travel reports from Italy are in the "Journal of Visual Arts " (1868 and 1869) have been published.
