Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law

The Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law ( Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law ) was founded in 1949 by the Max Planck Society and has its headquarters in Heidelberg. It dates back to 1924, founded Kaiser- Wilhelm- Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, which was in turn from a foundation of the entrepreneur Carl Leopold Netter of 1916/18.

The Institute is regularly managed by two directors, the management changes in two yearly intervals between the directors. By the end of 2012, the directors of the Institute Rüdiger Wolfrum were (since 1993) and Armin Bogdandy ( since 2002). 2013 was Anne Peters successor of Wolfrum.

Profile

The Institute is one of the most prestigious institutions in the German-speaking countries, research is carried out on issues of public international law, European law, comparative law, public law, as well as the theoretical foundations of transnational law. Directors and former directors of the Institute, the federal government and other public bodies to advise in many cases and have appeared before various courts for them. So represented, for example, Jochen Abr. Frowein the Federal Government before the International Court of Justice in the case of Certain Properties ( Liechtenstein v. Germany ). The library of the Institute contains over 615,000 volumes, the largest collection of international law, European law and public law in Europe. Its director is Harald Müller.

From the Institute of Directors different serials are issued. These include the monograph series contributions to foreign public law and international law, and also the quarterly magazine for Comparative Public Law and International Law (English / German, English title: Heidelberg Journal of International Law ), as well as the yearly published Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law (English ). Furthermore, the editors of the Journal for the History of International Law is part of the Institute, one of whose editors Rüdiger Wolfrum.

The institute is also known by the issued by the former director Rudolf Bernhardt in the first two editions multivolume Encyclopedia of Public International Law, the 2012 was re-issued under the editorship of Rüdiger Wolfrum as Max Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law.

The Institute is not divided into departments. However, there are presentations for the laws of different countries, European and international organizations for basic questions of international law and international legal specialties. A presentation will be supported in each case by one or more employees.
