Mayiladuthurai (Tamil: மயிலாடுதுறை Mayilāṭutuṟai [ majila ɖɯd̪urɛi ː ]; well Mayuram, Mayavaram ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The population is around 86,000 ( 2011 census ).

Mayiladuthurai is part of the district of Nagapattinam of the state of Tamil Nadu and is located approximately 280 kilometers south of Chennai in the Kaveri delta in a tributary of the Kaveri River. The next largest cities are 35 km west of Kumbakonam, Chidambaram 40 km north and 40 km south of Tiruvarur. The coast of the Bay of Bengal located 25 kilometers to the east.

Situated on the main route from Viluppuram Cuddalore about to Tiruchirappalli, Mayiladuthurai has good rail links. At Mayiladuthurai railway station also branches off to the side road Tiruvarur.

The main temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva its appearance as Mayuranathaswami ( " Mr. Peacock " ) dedicated. According to the myth, the goddess Parvati is said to have worshiped here in the shape of a peacock Shiva. This legend owes its name Mayiladuthurai ( " place where the peacock dances" ). The Mayuranathaswami Temple is about three acres and features a 50 -meter-high gopuram ( gate-tower ). Every year in October / November, Tula festival is held, in which the deity is taken in procession to the Cauvery River and bathed there. On the other side of the river in the suburb Tiruvindalur is the Parimala - Ranganathar temple, in which the god Vishnu is worshiped. He is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the holy places of the Tamil Vaishnavism.
