The monastery Mazan ( Mansiada ) is a former Cistercian abbey in France.

Location

The facility is located in the town of Mazan Abbaye in Vivarais, Ardèche, Rhône- Alpes, 42 km north- west of Aubenas.

History

The monastery was the first daughter house of the monastery Bonnevaux in Dauphiné (now Isere department ), the sixth daughter house of Citeaux Abbey founded in 1119. It was the mother monastery of Kloster Sylvanès, Monastery Le Thoronet, Bonneval Abbey, convent and monastery Sénanque Bonlieu (Loire). Also only briefly present monastery Porquerolles, an original founding of the Augustinian Canons, goes back to Mazan. The monastery had up to 23 Gran Gien. 1768 it was still one of 11 monks. In the train of the French Revolution, it was dissolved in 1791, then looted and the building fell into disrepair quickly. The church was first used as a parish church, but proved to be too large, and in the cloister was a cemetery. 1843 a smaller parish church was built using the surrounding wall. Although the church was classified in 1847 as a monument historique, but nevertheless used as a quarry; 1923 collapsed the vault. Since 1966, safety works were carried out.

Buildings and plant

From the exam yet, parts of the west wing of the restored in the 14th and 15th century cloister. From the church from around 1140 to 1150 with three semicircular apses and a narrow transept and three-aisled nave with square in the nave of four bays there still are large parts of the outer walls. The facade had a large rosette.
