McMicken Island State Park

McMicken Iceland State Park is a 4.7 -acre state park in Mason County in the U.S. state of Washington. The island is located in the southern Puget Sound east of Harstine Iceland, has over 500 feet of shoreline and is accessible only by boat in the first place. Only at low tide the island can also be reached on foot from Harstine Iceland.

The wooded island is located in a pristine bay with good anchorage options, visitors can hike on the island, watching bald eagles and catch crabs and shellfish. The stock of crabs and shellfish is productive, besides seals, black-throated diver and red-necked grebe can be observed.

History

In the 19th century moved a Swedish sailor on the island, which he named after himself Lundquist. However, the U.S. authorities rejected his claim of ownership on the island. The surveyor, who should then measured for the official maps, the island, the island was then his own name: McMicken. 1974 bought by the state of Washington the island, since it serves as a state park and is also managed by the Jarrell Cove State Park.
