Mediana

Mediana is an important archaeological site of the late Roman period in Serbia. The archaeological site is located in an eastern suburb of Niš, the ancient Naissus in Moesia Superior. Mediana was an imperial residence in the center of which the late antique villa, a peristyle and the baths from the time of Emperor Constantine the Great were. Mediana was exclusively for the emperor and his family as a residence in Naissus.

In Naissus Constantine the Great was born and raised on. To him, the construction of the residence goes back in Mediana, where he stayed for historical sources in the years 315, 319, 324, and 334. After his death in 337 the residence in Mediana was used by several other emperors. Constantine's sons, Constantius II and Constans went in winter 340 in Naissus. Later, Constans used the villa as a temporary residence. After Vetranio, commander of the army of the Danube, was proclaimed emperor in Sirmium, he handed the imperial insignia at 350 Constantius II in Naissus. Emperor Julian was at the end of the year 361 unexpectedly some time in Naissus during his campaign against Constantius II during which he wrote two months of Naissus out to the Roman Senate, to Athens and Corinth, in order to secure support. Valentinian I stayed in 364 Naissus on what can be seen from various imperial edicts. Naissus was the hometown of another Roman Emperor Constantius III. (425 ), husband of Galla Placidia, father vonValentinian III. The residence was abandoned after the invasions of the Huns under Attila 442.

Mediana is located on the tourist route "Street of the Holy Roman Emperor ", which connects all the important Roman and spätantikien excavation cities in Serbia.
