Medicine Lodge is the largest city in Barber County in the U.S. state of Kansas. It is the county seat ( the county seat ) and lies at the Medicine Lodge River. In 2000 the town had 2193 inhabitants and an area of 3.1 km ².

The city lies at the intersection of Highways U.S. Highway 160 and U.S. Highway 281

History

The city is located on an area which was regarded as sacred land in Kiowa. Because of disputes with the Indians, the U.S. government established in 1874 a fort

In the vicinity of today's city area, the Treaty of Medicine Lodge was completed in October 1867. The city celebrates three -year intervals, a three -day celebration to commemorate this Agreement ( the last time in 2006).
