Medvezhyi Islands

The Medweschji or bear Islands (Russian Медвежьи острова ) are an uninhabited group of islands at the western end of the Kolyma Gulf in the East Siberian Sea. The six islands are located about 100 kilometers from the mouth of the Kolyma. The largest, 15 -kilometer-long island of the group is located 35 kilometers off the coast of Siberia.

Administratively part of the group to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia ). The name is from the Russian word medved for "bear " or also derived "Polar Bear ".

History

The islands were discovered in 1710 by Yakov Permyakov as part of an expedition from the Lena estuary to the Kolyma.

During a lasting from 1820 to 1824 expedition Ferdinand von Wrangel by the East Siberian Sea and the Chukchi Sea, the Arctic explorer Fyodor Matjuschkin sailed the Medweschji Islands and charted this.

Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld also sighted the islands on his voyage through the Northeast Passage.

Others

The flora and fauna is typical of the tundra. The Medweschji Islands are almost constantly surrounded by ice and have a very cold, dry climate. In the summer of industrial fishing is done in the Island area.
