A mega Lara garuda male

Mega Lara garuda is a very large Grabwespenart. The males reach 32 to 34 mm, females 20-22 mm body length; the length of the forewing in males is 24 to 25 mm, females 19-20 mm. About behavior and habitat is so far very little is known, as well as to the purpose of the powerful mandibles of the males.

The name of the genus is a portmanteau word from Greek μέγας ( mégas; "large" ) and the two final syllables of Grabwesepen genus Dalara. The epithet refers to Garuda, a mythical creature from Indonesian mythology.

Discovery

The male and the female holotype was captured by the entomologists activist Linn Kimsey on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in December 2009. In August 2011, the discovery of the University of California was (then as Dalara garuda ) pre - published and described in March 2012 for the first time scientifically. As paratypes the first description were added, among others, two male specimens caught in the year 1930 and had been kept in the Museum of Natural History in Berlin without encountering greater scientific interest.
