Megara Hyblaea

Megara Megara Hyblaea or Hyblaia (Greek Μέγαρα Ὑβλαία ) is one of the oldest Greek cities in Sicily. The town is located 21 km north of Syracuse and ten kilometers south of Augusta, in the midst of industrial plants.

History

Megara Hyblaea was founded in 729 BC by colonists from Megara in Greece. She is one of the oldest foundations in Sicily. The city grew because of the trade to the lake. Because of the enormous growth of the city migrated in the 7th century BC, some Megarians and were founded about 650 BC Selinunte.

483 BC the city of Gelon of Syracuse was destroyed. To 340 BC it was rebuilt by Timoleon again and 213 BC finally destroyed by the Romans.

History of Research

Georges Vallet and François Villard began in 1949 for the École française de Rome, the exploration of Megara Hyblaea, which continues today.

Attractions

  • The Antiquarium at the site of the excavation there is a part of the finds, others are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Syracuse.
  • On the site of fortifications, houses, temples and other buildings have been found.
