Meir Shamgar

Meir Shamgar (Hebrew מאיר שמגר; * as Meir Sternberg on August 13, 1925 in Gdańsk ) is an Israeli lawyer. From 1983 to 1995 he was president of the Israeli Supreme Court.

Life

Shamgar emigrated in 1939 from the Free City of Danzig in the British Mandate of Palestine and studied history and philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and law at the Government Law School, University of London.

He served in the Israel Defense Forces, was there from 1961 head of the military prosecutor's office. As a brigadier general, he retired in 1968 from active service and was Attorney General of Israel, as well as legal advisor to the Prime Minister of Israel. In 1975 he moved as a judge to the Supreme Court, which he was president from 1983 to 1995.

Shamgar led the investigation commission on the murders by Baruch Goldstein and the stop on Yitzhak Rabin.
