Meira Kumar

Meira Kumar ( born March 31, 1945 in Patna ) is an Indian politician and member of the Congress party in the lower house of the Indian Parliament. In June 2009 she was elected the first female President of the Parliament.

Life

Kumar is the daughter of jagjivan Ram, a member of the government under Prime Minister Morarji Desai and fighter for the rights of the Dalit ( the caste of " untouchables ", from which it is derived ). She is a lawyer with degree from the University of Delhi and former diplomat.

From 2004 to 2009, she stood in front of the Ministry of Social Justice and transfer of responsibility in the Cabinet Minister Manmohan Singh 1. Your unanimous election to the Assembly Speaker on June 3, 2009 is seen as a sensation and contribute to the long-planned introduction of a 33 per cent quota for women. In her brief acceptance speech she described herself as a passionate advocate of women's empowerment.
