Melekeok (town)

Melekeok is the capital of Palau. It is located in the same administrative area Melekeok on Babelthuap, the largest island of the Pacific island republic of Palau. The town has 391 inhabitants ( 2005 census ) village character (the state Melekeok counts 9391 inhabitants). Larger settlements are not, however, around the main island.

On 7 October 2006 Melekeok sparked the city as the capital of Palau Koror from. Melekeok still has no paved road and the individual houses are partly covered by the rainforest. During the building of highly varying quality - from humble dwellings to American-style villas - located along the main road near the coast almost at sea level, 2006, a vast complex of government buildings was erected over the settlement. The representative structures include a parliament building, as well as for the executive and the judiciary. The so-called Capitol Complex is located high up in quiet green surroundings and is widely visible across the island.

History

The city Melekeok has a long history as a center of power in Palau. She was frequently the scene of village wars. It stood there for several men's houses ( Bais ), which were destroyed during the Japanese occupation. 1992 men's house was rebuilt in the traditional style.
