Melkersson–Rosenthal syndrome
The Melkersson -Rosenthal syndrome ( MRS) is an idiopathic inflammatory disease that causes a peripheral facial paralysis.
Cause
Cause of the Melkersson -Rosenthal syndrome is a granulomatous inflammation ( arteritis ).
Clinical picture
The Melkersson -Rosenthal syndrome manifests itself in the triad:
- Increasingly furrowed tongue (lingua plicata)
- Paroxysmal occurring swelling around the lips, by enlarged lip salivary glands (as granulomatous cheilitis ) or the face ( around the eyes, cheeks or forehead)
- Paroxysmal peripheral facial paralysis occurring in only 10% of cases ( caused by a swelling of the facial nerve canal in AD VII)
Generally occurs a spontaneous remission, it is, however, a tendency to recur. The disease is often manifested already at a young age. There is a frequent association with Crohn's disease.
Therapy
The therapy consists of intralesional corticosteroid injection ( in severe swelling ) and the administration of clofazimine or DADPS (both leprosy actually means ).
In mild swelling helps cortisone example Prednisolone ( 1mg/kg body weight) for 2 weeks.
