Melocactus paucispinus is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The specific epithet paucispinus means, with little spines '.

Description

Melocactus paucispinus grows with gray-green, strongly depressed either hemispherical or disc-shaped bodies that reach heights of growth 7-12 centimeters in diameter and 15 to 19 centimeters. The bodies are often partially buried in the sand. There are 9 to 10 ribs available. A central spine is missing. The 3-6 recurved, gray spines have a darker tip, and are 2 to 3.2 inches long. The bottom edge of spine is the longest. The cream- white wool and fine more or less pink bristles cephalium formed is 3 to 6 inches high and reaches a diameter 7-8 cm.

The deep pink flowers are 1.8 to 2.6 inches long and have diameters from 0.9 to 1.5 centimeters. The fruits are bright lilac pink and 1.4 to 1.9 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and hazard

Melocactus paucispinus is widespread in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

The first description was in 1983 by G. homes and RJ Paul.

Melocactus paucispinus be listed in Annex I of the CITES Convention. In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN 2002 she was described as " Endangered ( EN ) ', ie endangered classified. In 2013, the species as "Least Concern ( LC) ," ie, than not led at risk.
