It rises in the interior south of the Brooks Range and flows in a southwesterly direction. In Ruby it flows into the Yukon.
The name of the original inhabitants of the river was documented in 1867 by an expedition of the Western Union Telegraph Company as " Melozecargut " ( " mouth of the Meloze "). It was presumably at the LA Sagoskin, a lieutenant in the Imperial Russian Navy, mentioned in the 1840 " R [ eka ] Molekofitna " also around this river.
