Menachem Mendel Schneersohn

Menachem Mendel Schneersohn (Hebrew מנחם מנדל שניאורסון; . * 9 Septemberjul / September 20 1789greg in Ljosna, .. † 17 Märzjul / March 29 1866greg in Lubavitch. ), Also known as the Tzemach Tzedek ( צמח צדק, " Scion of Justice " ) was an Orthodox rabbi and the third Rebbe - spiritual leader - the Chabad movement, a Hasidic group within orthodox Judaism.

Life

Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn was born in 1789 in Ljosna, Belarus, his parents Shalom Schachna and Devora Lea, a daughter of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Ljadi. When he was three years old, his mother died, and his grandfather, R. Schneur Zalman, his foster father. In 1803 he married his cousin Chaya Moussia ( a daughter of Rabbi Dovber of Lubavitch ). After the death of his father / uncle, he took over the day before Shavuot 5591 (5 May 1831) head of the Chabad movement. He died on 13 Nisan 5626 (29 March 1866) in Lubavitch, leaving seven sons and two daughters. His youngest son, Shmuel, succeeded him as Rebbe of Lubavitch, while four other sons founded their own Hasidic centers which were in varying degrees to the Holocaust (1941-1945) inventory.

After his responsa Tzemach Tzedek Schneersohn plant is also called Tzemach Tzedek. His first name Menachem ( מנחם ) corresponds to the numerical value of Zemach ( צמח ), his first name Mendel ( מנדל ) corresponds to the numerical value of Zedek ( צדק ) (see Gematria ).

Services

Schneersohn founded the charity Chevras Techias HaMejsim, the Jewish child soldiers supported who were recruited by the tsarist army for years of military service and were often encouraged to convert to Christianity.

He founded yeshivas in Dubrowno and Kalisk where learned together about 600 students.

He gained important manuscripts of his grandfather, Schneur Zalman of Ljadi, and published them under the name Likutei Torah, Torah Or ( both Hasidic comments to the weekly sections of the Torah ) and Siddur in the roof (Commentary on the Siddur ).
