Merkurios of Makuria

Mercurio was a Nubian king of the kingdom of Makuria, who ruled from 696 until after 710.

Mercurios is known from various sources. In the annals of the Coptic Patriarch, he is called the new Constantine, indicating that he had a special position in the introduction of Christianity in Nubia. He is also mentioned in two contemporary inscriptions. In one of the Cathedral of Faras he might appear even as their client. The inscription is dated in the year 707 and witnessed the same time its 11th year of reign. At the founding stone, dated 710, the Church of Taifa it is also called.

Under Mercurios is attested for the first time the office of Eparch. It has been suggested, which were united under the ruler Makuria and Nobatia to a country because no longer appear since about his reign Nobatia as an independent state.
