Merope (wife of Cresphontes)

Merope (Greek Μερόπη ) In Greek mythology, the daughter of Cypselus, widow of Cresphontes and wife of Polyphontes.

After Cresphontes had been killed in an uprising, Merope was forcibly married to the new ruler of Messenia, the Heraclidae Polyphontes, but was able to save one of the sons of Cresphontes to Arcadia to her father Kypselos. The son returned later to avenge his father. According to Pausanias and the Libraries of Apollodorus was the name of the Son Aipytos, according to Hyginus Mythographus Telephontes. In Euripides, he was like his father Cresphontes.

She is a character dramas fragment of Euripides and heroine of the tragedies of Scipione Maffei ( Merope, 1714), Voltaire (La Mérope française, 1736) and Vittorio Alfieri ( Merope1785 ).
