The Merzig station ( Saar) is a railway station on the Saarstrecke between Saarbrücken and Trier. Connected to the station are a bus station and a taxi rank.

Overview

Barrier-free access is granted only on track 1, for 2013, however, a corresponding rebuilding the railway station Merzig is provided.

From the station, the museum railway branches off to Losheim. Before the Second World War -chain in Merzig a train track over Mechern and Mondorf off to the French Bettelainville. After blowing up the bridge in the Second World War, this was, however, no longer passable. After the Saar expanding the pillars have been removed as the last remnants of this bridge. In addition to three platform tracks and some Güter-/Abstellgleisen the Merzig station via a Panzerverladerampe features.

Reception building

While still working on the Saarstrecke from Saarbruecken to Merzig consideration has been given to the construction of Merziger reception building. The construction period can be determined very accurately, since a copy of the original design drawing was made in 1884, which is preserved. This design drawing floor plans, sections and elevations was marked with the date April 1858 and had the signature department architect dear. With the construction of the building, so must have been started shortly after that date.

Train Crash in 2004

On the night of 24 October to 25 October 2004 to Monday derailed against 0:10 clock the TKC ore train 47797 (Rotterdam - Dillingen ) in Merzig station. 16 cars derailed and tipped over. The other wagons and locomotives (BR 151 091 and BR151 095) remained without damage. People did not come with the misfortune to damage. Cause of the accident was apparently a broken axle on one of the wagons. The total damage amounted, according to the DB AG to 2 to 4 million euros.
