Mesomedes

Mesomedes was an ancient Greek Kitharöde and lyricist. He was a native of Crete and, according to Suda was a freedman of Hadrian. Eusebius reported that his main creative period is to be set at 144. The one of his poems have survived in the Anthologia Palatina and the anthology Planudea. In addition, another 13 received poems. Four of them are provided with musical notes. It is in the poems to animal fables, hymns, the description of a sponge and a clock and a description of the manufacture of glass. His language indicates a Doric dialect. The versification are diverse, especially anapästisch.
