Geographical distribution and occurrence

The Bergmatten herbs tensioner is found predominantly in mountainous and hilly areas of Central Europe. The distribution ranges of Spain over the Alps and the Balkans to the Middle East. It is missing in Northern and Eastern Europe. The altitudinal distribution includes layers of 600 to 2500 meters, preferably in the Alps, the region between 1000 and 1500 meters. Main habitat of the species are forest glades and edges, mountain meadows, lean lawns, overgrown with shrubs grasslands and marshy terrain.

Way of life

The main flight period of moths are the months of June, July and August. They are mainly crepuscular and nocturnal. At dusk they like to suck on the flowers of the following plants:

  • Common Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea )
  • Monkshood (Aconitum napellus )
  • Round-leaved bellflower ( Campanula rotundifolia ).

At night they visit artificial light sources. The females scatter their eggs usually solitary and loose in the vegetation. The caterpillars feed on various low plants, for example by Bärwurz ( Meum athamanticum ) or Hasenlattich ( Premanthes purpurea) and live from April to June. They pupate in a slight cocoon on the ground. The species overwinters as an egg.

Endangering

The Bergmatten herbs tensioner comes in Germany in different numbers before, lacking in some of the western, northern and northeastern regions, and is on the Red List of endangered species in category 3 ( endangered) out.
