Messner Mountain Museum
The Messner Mountain Museum ( MMM ) is a museum project of Reinhold Messner in the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno. Five different locations thereby form a mountain museum.
Built the project from the center MMM Firmian and the satellite MMM Juval MMM Dolomites, MMM MMM Ortles and Ripa. From the central structure starting the distances between the center and the satellite impressions along the way are interlinked and in addition part of the museum. Except for the annual opening ceremonies in the individual objects are all the other events held centrally in Firmian.
Projects
Firmian
In the late medieval building of the castle Sigmundskron Bolzano (location: 46.48059811.30484 ⊙ ) is the headquarters of the museum project. Here are the management and spaces for events. There is a rock theater, which seats 200 people space. On 11 June 2006, the museum was after three years of construction, in which nearly ruined castle was restored and transformed, opened.
The concept of Firmian based on three strands: the castle, the restructuring and exhibitions. So should not be destroyed by modern alterations the appearance of the castle. Covering an area of 1100 square meters is the actual MMM Firmian. Theme of the MMM Firmian is the history and art of mountaineering. Messner wants to show " what makes the mountain with the people " and an understanding of the mountain and the people in the mountains. He demonstrates this with the help of pictures, sculptures and symbolic objects and memorabilia of various expeditions, which are issued on a tour through the castle. In addition, Messner shows the history of mountaineering and the effects of mountaineering and tourism on nature and the environment. In the so-called White Tower is a separate exhibition on the history of the castle and the region.
Between Schlern and Texel group out there - art, installations, relics inside - shows the large-scale system from a course. The Museum Firmian " is an authoritarian Museum, which dictates how it would like to be visited. Juval
This part of the MMM is with Juval Castle in Naturns (location: ⊙ 46.65153110.968019 ) housed in a late medieval castle, and was inaugurated in 1995. This castle is Messner's privately owned and used by him in the summer as a residence.
This MMM deals with the myth of the mountain. It is mostly about the sacred mountains of the world, such as the Kailash, Mount Fuji or Ayers Rock. In addition, Tibetan exhibits like precious Buddha sculptures and a large prayer wheel are shown. There is also an exhibition about Gesar Ling an epic, Tibetan king, a tantric room and an expedition room in the basement. Dolomites
On Monte Rite, in a fort dating from the First World War between Valle del Boite and Val di Zoldo (location: 46.3839312.254713 ⊙ ), at an altitude of 2181 meters there is the MMM Dolomites. This museum in the clouds was opened in 2002 and has the vertical world of the Dolomites to the topic. It is shown the development of the Dolomites as well as part of Alpine history and its protagonists.
Ortles
Below the Ortler Solda (location: 46.53043810.579247 ⊙ ) is located underground, the fourth part of the MMM. Since its opening in 2004, is located on an exhibition area of 300 square meters, the theming of eternal ice and Ortler with exhibitions on skiing, ice climbing, Arctic and Antarctic. Ripa
The fifth part of the MMM was (MMM Mountain Peoples ) with the MMM Ripa Bruneck Castle above the town of Bruneck (location: ⊙ 46.79429911.939497 ) created and opened in July 2011. It is an interactive museum, the various hill tribes to provide a forum to exchange experiences with the local population. Costs and financing
The cost of the project is estimated at up to 30 million euros. These are split between Messner and the province of South Tyrol. The latter financed the expansion of the old walls, in return Messner must maintain its exhibitions without subsidies for 30 years. The restoration of the former fort on Monte Rite took over the Veneto region, together with the municipality of Pieve di Cadore. For the renovation and design of MMM Mountain Peoples costs between three and four million euros are estimated to be over 80% from South Tyrol to give financial assistance to the municipality of Brunico.
Criticism
The project is not without controversy, especially in the population. Messner is accused of a " Messner Mausoleum " to create themselves. Furthermore, the MMM is referred to as "Disneyland" that destroys the South Tyrolean culture.
