Methylpentynol ( INN), also methylpentynol or Meparfynol, is a drug from the group of sedatives and hypnotics. Chemically, it is a compound of alkynes and alcohols, which was patented in 1913 by Bayer.

The carbamate of Methylpentynols was used as an active ingredient in sleeping pills and tranquilizers. Through the development of substances with a favorable action and safety profile Methylpentynol has no therapeutic significance. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland no longer preparations are on the market.

Properties and Safety

Methylpentynol is a colorless, odorless, highly flammable liquid that easily dissolves in water. The mixtures of Methylpentynoldampf with air are in the range from 1.8 to 16 vol - % explosive. The substance is hazardous for water. In animal studies with mice and rats showed Methylpentynol despite relatively high LD50 values, even at lower doses symptoms such as drowsiness, muscle twitching and reduced size growth.
