Metsküla, Saare County

Metsküla is a village on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. It belongs to the rural community Leisi. Metsküla has 124 inhabitants (as of 2007 ).

Metsküla is known primarily for the Orthodox " representation - the - Lord" Church (Estonian Issanda Templisseviimise Nicholas' Church ) with its two onion domes. It is one of the best preserved examples of the Estonian wooden church architecture. The log cabin church was built in 1909-1914.

The church dates from the expiring Russifizierungsphase in Estonia. At the end of the 19th and early 20th century, the Russian Orthodox missionary in Estonia, which was funded by the tsarist government in Russia, numerous inhabitants of Saaremaa from Lutheranism had converted to the Orthodox faith in the course.

The Church of Metsküla now belongs to the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ( Eesti Apostlik - Õigeusu Kirik ). It is therefore with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel.
