The Mättenberg or Mette Berg is a mountain in the Bernese Alps, at an altitude of 3'104 m above sea level. M. The mountain is located in Grindelwald between the Wetterhorn and the Upper Grindelwald Glacier to the northeast and Unterer Grindelwald Eiger Glacier and the West.

Geography

Together with Wetterhorn and Eiger forms of Mättenberg the steep, marked by high cliffs southern edge of the Grindelwald valley basin.

Since the Mättenberg drops in a steep wall to the north, the summit of Grindelwald is not seen. A 2,924 m above sea level. M. high pre-peak is also approximately 500 meters northwest of the summit.

The Mättenberg is the northern end of the mountain range that extends from the summit about ten miles above Ankenbälli ( 3'161 m above sea level. M. ), Gwächta ( 3'164 m above sea level. M. ), lower Schreckhorn ( 3'494 m above sea. M. ), Nässihorn ( 3'741 m above sea level. M. ), Schreckhorn ( 4'078 m above sea level. M. ), Lauteraarhorn ( 4'042 m above sea level. M. ), lower Lauteraarhorn ( 3,620 m above sea level. M. ), Hugihorn ( 3'647 m above sea level. M. ) and Lauteraar Rothörner ( 3'473 m above sea level. M. ) moves to the southeast, and there falls to Finsteraargletscher.

On the northeast flank of the Mättenbergs is the Wächselgletscher.

Geology

The Mättenberg consists largely in the bottom part of parautochtonem Malmkalk and in the upper part of gneiss of the Aare Massif.

In the retreat area of the Upper Grindelwald Glacier, a cave was discovered in 1994 in the limestone wall. The Milchbach Cave usually leads plenty of water.

Tourism

At the northern foot of the mountain is a aerial tramway connecting the village of Grindelwald Pfingstegg ( 1'392 m above sea level. M. ), a starting point for hikes and mountain tours, inter alia, to Bäregghütte on the western edge high above the Lower Grindelwald Glacier and on to Schreckhorn hut.

On the trail of the Pfingstegg the Upper Grindelwald Glacier, a 150 meter long tunnel was opened in 2005, which protects pedestrians from stone chips in the field of Breitlouwina.

Upper Grindelwald Glacier and Lower Grindelwald Glacier with glacier gorge are other attractions at the foot of the mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps are like the Mättenberg Jungfrau-Aletsch.

History

First ascent

The date of the first ascent is not known. Rudolf Beck tells of the first ascent of Nordgrats on August 19, 1912 by a four- rope team, who was next to him and the mountain guide Emil Steuri. At that time there were at the summit already a trigonometric signal.

Climate change

Around the Mättenberg climate change can be clearly perceived. Upper and Lower Grindelwald glaciers have retreated far, permafrost thawed. This has led, in particular at the incision between Mättenberg and Eiger to several landslides and rock falls, for example, to large debris flows in the spring of 2000 and landslides in the summer of 2005. Stieregghütte the Lower Grindelwald glacier had to be abandoned due to the latter.

Media

The Mättenberg with its striking rock tower at the end of Nordgrats above the Upper Grindelwald Glacier - North tower or a mountain guide Emil Steuri called Steurihorn - can be seen at the beginning of the station idents of Swiss Television SF 1.
