Meurthe Department

The department of Meurthe is a former French Territory, whose capital was Nancy.

The department was created in 1790 and 1800 divided into five arrondissements. The sub-prefectures (French Sous- Prefectures ) were Château- Salins, Luneville, Sarrebourg and Toul. In 1866 the department had 714 municipalities and 428 387 inhabitants.

By the Treaty of Frankfurt, Germany received in 1871, large parts of Alsace and Lorraine, including the north-east of the department of Meurthe with the sub- prefectures of Château- Salins and Sarrebourg. The rest of the Meurthe formed together with a small remnant of the original departments of Moselle department the new Meurthe- et -Moselle, while the come to Germany part Meurthes was combined with the German annexed most of the former departments of Moselle Lorraine to the district.

The Treaty of Versailles of Alsace and Lorraine in 1919 were French again, but the former limits of the departments were not restored. The community Raon- lès- Leau still calls back, a 1000 acre forest, which had been struck at the instigation of Bismarck's Germany in 1871 in order to control the strategically important Donon can. Since then, the forest belongs to the municipality of Alsace Grand Fontaine.
