Mexico City Policy

As a global gag rule (after eng. Gag rule, " do not talk about it ") was the Mexico City Policy (also Mexico City Gag Rule ), one started in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan Policy in the United States, is known.

The Global Gag Rule was that all non-governmental organizations (NGOs ) that provide information and offer services regarding abortion or comment even favorable to the financial resources of the U.S. government be deleted. The decree suspended the NGOs very forcibly, as the benefits of the Government of the United States constitute a major portion of the funds allocated for family planning organizations in developing countries. The policy was initially from 1984 to 1993, was then set by Bill Clinton repealed. In January 2001, the policy under George W. Bush re-entered into force and was again terminated in January 2009, shortly after the government takeover of Barack Obama. Binding of U.S. development aid to the condition that funded organizations do not advocate abortion, not counsel women about this topic or may be used for the legalization of abortion, has been heavily criticized since it according to critics, the opposite of caused what purpose had. Due to the lack of financial resources, the NGOs were forced to limit their educational work in family planning and the distribution of contraceptives or entirely. This would increase the number of unwanted pregnancies, abortions and deaths result.
